Info & Registration

At Thrive, we are very passionate about using local resources and natural materials. We are hosting Malta's first cob natural building workshop. It will be an introduction to natural building focusing on working with cob. Cob is a natural building material made from soil, water, fibrous organic material (typically straw), and some others. Cob is fireproof, resistant to seismic activity, and uses low-cost materials, although it is very labour intensive. It can be used to create artistic and sculptural forms, and its use has been revived in recent years by the natural building and sustainability movements. Cob can be used to build houses, cob ovens, benches and many other structures.

 

The workshop will be held over four full days, on two consecutive weekends for 353EUR over four full days:

  • Saturday 29th October 2022 full day

  • Sunday 30th October 2022 full day

  • Saturday 5th November 2022 full day

  • Sunday 6th November 2022 full day

Lunch and Dinner are included.

If there is very rainy weather we will need to postpone to the following weekend. If you would only like to attend one weekend please get in contact. 

We are limited to 10 participants due to limited space on our working site.

Workshop content:

  • Introduction to natural and cob building theory: material selection and cob composition, grain structure, thermal mass, heat storage, insulation, protection from water and rodents, tools, maintenance. Cob Flooring: specification for flooring and layering, floor heating and floor finishes.

  • Hands-on: Cob composition & Making a cob floor where first two layers of floor will be completed (third layer is just a finishing layer.

  • Lunch, an afternoon snack and dinner are included.

Your Facilitator: Robert Brendler

Handy-Man & Founder of permaskills, he has been into construction since the age of 12 when he accompanied his grandpa on construction sites. He’s a Jack of all trades, experienced in Masonry, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical Wiring, Home Automation, Cob Building & Sculpting and Green-Roofs. He has completed cob training with CruzinCobGlobal in 2019, and roof teaching and cob teaching assistance. Robert has been hosting cob workshops since 2020 with Permaskills, teaching students how to build structures using cob such as a house with cob/straw bale/light straw clay/rammed earth , outdoor kitchen with cob/wattle & daub and green roofs. Among others ruin restoration with cob/tiled roof/rocket mass heater and cob pizza ovens. He has done holistic consulting on Natural Building Projects since 2021 in Italy, Portugal, Germany, Uganda, Kenya. More info www.permaskills.org
